Don't Wanna talk 'bout politics

I have a dear friend somewhere around in Belgium who never had the pleasure of reading a post of mine since she doesn't read portuguese... for now! So, in order to dedicate this little text to her, it'll be written in English (sorry for the grammar, it's been long since i've written plain text)

To Naomi, hope you're doing okay!

So why the title? The title actually comes from a song by Korn, not that being the question, of course.

Politics are all around us. Every company, government, even a group of friends develop politics so that decisions can be made. And hopefully they are the best! The university is just one of those places where politics are involved, more than you could ever imagine!

And so I atended my first RGA (reunião geral de alunos, student general meeting). It really wasn't in my plans to "waste" my time there since I should be studying (like right now I should be) and meeting my girlfriend later. However I was persuaded by one of the people in charge of the reunion. We would talk about the "Bolonha process" and the "Barrier Year". And only morrons wouldn't be interested in what is to happen of them... 500 people directly affected by those issues skiped the reunion, some had stuff to do, others... draw your conclusions.

At first it seemed like the portuguese parlament... due to the lack of people (56, around 5% of the Medicine college). The student association lead the RGA very neatly by the actual rules that govern the PT republic assembly...all was coordinated like a well orchestrated dance. For those who really, I mean really, payed attention, there were two sides of that meeting to be seen. The information side and the power struggle.

Since the few who care about the information can read it on any college forum, I'll focus on the fascinating world of the Politic "wannabes". Note that I'm trying to ofend them, they play an important, if not the most important, role in keeping some order in the college, serving as a proxy between the students will and the suits ideas. But as in all representative democracies, representants have to be elected. And elections are right at the door, smelling your perfumme on the key hole. In that tiddy auditory reserved for the meeting you could see the heads of every proeminent party... all harassing the president's seat!

However there is a very important aspect I'd like to reference. The big, huge difference betweeen college politics and parlament politics. They are both working for a common goal... why can't politicians achieve the goal? We can! I'll tell you why, the only difference I note between those two groups: effect.

What effect does a medical budget cut have on a politician's private office? None. But if we are talking about the barrier year, 50% of the students are affected, therefore they want the problem resolve. Due to that, differences are put aside so that the student mass can work as a single cell, a well oiled machine. The E list wants the power of course, but they also want not to be f***** in the pooper by the administrative suits that govern the college like a bunch of 5 year old drunk bipolar kids.

I could write much more about the power struggle but, to be honest, my head hurts and I should really go back to study. Plus It'll be more interesting when the election results come! I'll keep ya posted!

To the usual readers (my dog), I'm sorry if the quality of the post seems kind of doubtfull, I'm not in my best state today.

I'd also like to congratulate Kummando's girlfriend on catching the greatest guy in the world and the one who deserves it more! Congratulations to both of you!

Congratulations to whatever disease I have right now... you are by far the one I've hated more since I was born.
